GRP stands for glass reinforced plastic, the same material boat hulls are made from. It goes on wet and cures into one solid sheet, so there are no seams, no laps and nothing for water to creep under. That is the whole point of it. On a felt roof the joins are the weak spot, and on a GRP roof there are none. We lay GRP on flat roofs, balconies, dormers, porches and garage roofs across Egham and the wider Surrey area.

What the job involves

A proper look first

Before we quote we get up and check the deck, the falls and what is already up there. GRP has to go onto a dry, solid base, so we need to know what is underneath before we can price it honestly.

A new deck, and the falls set right

GRP is normally laid onto fresh OSB3 boarding rather than over an old covering, because the resin needs a clean dry base to bond to. We replace any soft boards, lay the new deck and set the falls so water runs to the outlet instead of sitting in puddles.

Laid up in one continuous sheet

Chopped strand matting is laid out and rolled through with catalysed resin, then left to cure into a single solid skin. We work to the weather, because GRP needs dry conditions and a sensible temperature to go off properly.

GRP trims, edges and drainage

Purpose-made GRP drip trims and edge trims, outlets, and flashing where the roof meets a wall. The trims are bonded into the same laminate, so the edge becomes part of the roof rather than something stuck on afterwards.

Tidy site, rubbish taken away

We keep the area clean as we work and take the old covering, the offcuts and the empty resin tins away with us. You are not left with a pile of it on the drive.

Where GRP works best, and where it does not

GRP is at its best on balconies, dormers, porches, bay roofs and anywhere that gets walked on or is on show. It is hard, it takes foot traffic without complaint, it can be finished in a colour, and with no joins there is nowhere obvious for a leak to start. It is also the sensible answer where a roof is an awkward shape, because it is laid up in place rather than cut from a roll.

It is not right for everything, and we would rather say so. On a large roof over a timber structure that moves a lot, a rigid laminate can crack where a rubber or felt covering would flex and cope. It also cannot be laid properly in the wet or the cold, so in winter we sometimes have to wait for a dry spell. We will look at your roof and give you a straight recommendation rather than push the dearest option.

A properly laid GRP roof will normally see 25 to 30 years, and often more. There are no joins to fail and the surface does not go brittle the way old felt does. What matters most is the deck underneath and the way the edges are detailed, which is why we do not rush that part. We guarantee our own work for up to 10 years.

Yes, and that is one of the main reasons people choose it. A GRP laminate is hard enough to take normal foot traffic, so it suits balconies, roof terraces and any flat roof you need to get across to reach a window or a boiler flue. If it is going to be walked on daily we can add a non-slip finish, which is worth doing on a balcony.

Usually not, and anyone who says otherwise is cutting a corner. GRP needs to bond to a clean, dry, solid deck, so the old covering normally comes off and fresh boarding goes down. It is more work at the start, but it is what makes the roof last. Stripping it back also lets us see the timber underneath and replace anything that has gone soft while we are there.
